SPPS prize Sometimes plain A4 becomes a real prize in the creative process. The SPPS Awards are given to senior scientists for their significant contributions in the advancement of plant science. The award statue contains an actual real gilded leaf of Laurus Nobilis – an ancient symbol of highest status and victory. This plant and particularly its leaves have long cultural roots in the academic world dating back to the ancient Greece. Each prize is handmade and the leaf has been cast into a resin using a Petri dish. The SPPS award thus brings together a symbol of experimental laboratory science used in plant physiology and an ancient symbol of victory.
